TRANSOUTH: Smith Athletic Director of the Year![]() NASHVILLE, Tenn. – TranSouth Athletic Conference commissioner E.L. Hutton is pleased to announce that Trevecca Nazarene University athletic director Alan Smith has been chosen as the 2006 TranSouth Conference Athletic Director of the Year. The honoree is selected by a vote of the TranSouth athletic directors.
During Smith’s tenure as director, Trevecca’s athletic department has seen enormous growth. Eight years ago the picture was significantly different. During the 1997-98 season Trevecca's five sports at the time produced only three measurable awards. The women's basketball team had the TranSouth's freshman of the year and the newcomer of the year and had a player named third team All-TranSouth. As one of the founding members of the TranSouth Conference, Trevecca had never won a conference championship until last year (2004-2005). Trevecca won four last year (men’s basketball, baseball, softball, women’s golf). This year Trevecca has added three more conference championship banners to hang in the rafters of Moore Gym (men’s basketball, softball, women’s golf). Last year 23 Trevecca athletes earned first-team all-conference honors, and 11 more made the conference second team. Three players were named to the all-freshman team, one was newcomer of the year, and two players were named conference player of the year. Twenty-three Trojans were named TranSouth Player of the Week. In baseball the TranSouth Player of the Year and the Coach of the Year hailed from Trevecca. A total of three Trevecca coaches were named conference coach of the year as the TranSouth Women’s Golf and Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year also wore the Trojan colors last year. Twenty-nine Trevecca athletes earned All-TranSouth Scholar-Athlete honors. Trevecca finished with its highest ranking ever in the TranSouth All-Sports Trophy contest. The All-Sports trophy is awarded to the team with the best all-around sports program in the conference. Trevecca finished second for the first time in the history of the contest. On the NAIA Region XI level Trevecca added more to its list of honors. Seven Trojans were selected to the all-region first team, and one earned second team honors. Seven Trevecca athletes were selected as the NAIA All-Region XI Player of the Week. The NAIA Region XI Baseball Player of the Year was from Trevecca. The baseball, softball, men’s golf, and women’s golf teams all reached their respective Region XI tournaments. On the national level the Trojans produced a first-team NAIA All-American, a second team All-American, a third team All-American, three honorable mention All-Americans, and five NAIA Academic All-Americans. Trevecca also had its first member on the NAIA Women’s Basketball All-Tournament Team. The men’s and women’s basketball teams reached the NAIA National Tournament with the women reaching the elite 8 and the men reaching the sweet 16. The growth can be connected to the promotion of Alan Smith as athletic director during the 1998-99 school year. Since his hiring, Smith has been a key ingredient in the school’s addition of four sports (men's and women's teams in golf and soccer) and building two on-campus facilities. Trevecca’s softball and soccer facilities were added, and major improvements were made to the baseball field. The success has continued this season with a championship in men’s basketball and women’s golf and softball. In additions, nearly every athletic team has seen team and individual records fall over the last two seasons. Smith was inducted into the Trevecca Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993. In 1995 Smith was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame. Smith was the first, and remains the only, person from Trevecca to be inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame. Smith began his tenure in the Trevecca athletic department as the head coach of the first ever Trevecca men's and women's tennis teams in 1972. Smith coached the men's team until the program was terminated in 1992. During his 20-year tennis coaching career at Trevecca, Smith amassed a career record of 300-129. A seven-time Conference Coach of the Year and five-time NAIA District 24 Coach of the Year, Smith’s services to Trevecca have been recognized on both a local and national scale. Trevecca Nazarene University is grateful for the contributions of Alan Smith and congratulates him for this honor. • Inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1995 • Inducted into the Trevecca Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993 • Started the Men’s and Women’s Tennis Program at Trevecca in 1972 • Coached Men’s Tennis at Trevecca: 1972-1992 • Career Tennis Record: 300-129 • NAIA District 24 Coach of the Year: 1986, ’88,’89, ’90, ’92 • Conference Coach of the Year: 1976, ’78, ’86, ’88, ’89, ’90, ’92 • NAIA Team National Rankings: 1981 (16th); 1982 (9th); 1983 (20th); 1986 (19th); 1987 (8th); 1988 (13th); 1989 (12th); 1990 (6th); 1992 (10th) • NAIA District 24 District Championships: 1986, ’87, ’88, ’89, ’90, ’92 • Conference Team Championships: 1986, ’87, ’88, ’89, ’90, ’92 • Member of the NAIA National Tennis Ranking Committee: 1991, 1992; Chairman, 1993-1999 • Member of the NAIA National Tennis Tournament Committee: 1985-1999 • Secretary for the NAIA Coaches Association: 1991, 1992 Coached: • 5 All-Americans • 5 Honorable Mention All-Americans • 4 Academic All-Americans • 1 Honorable Mention Academic All-American 5/2/2006, 3:28 PM |
