Union reached the final after defeating NAIA No. 19 and the tournaments No. 3 seed Lambuth University 97-74 in Friday’s other semifinal game. Union University is the host team as the tournament’s No. 1 seed. The championship game will be played at Union’s Fred Delay Gymnasium on their Jackson, Tenn. campus at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 5, 2007. It’s the second year in a row for the Trojans to make the finals, the third time they have faced Union in the final and their fourth trip the title game in the 11-year history of the women’s program at Trevecca. Union missed last year’s title game after making the finals the first nine years of the conference’s existence. This will be the 10th time in the 11-year history of the TranSouth Conference that Union has reached the final. Union won the first seven TranSouth Tournament Championships, but hasn’t won one since they defeated Freed-Hardeman 77-72 in the 2003 title game. Trevecca defeated Union in Jackson in last year’s TranSouth Tournament semifinal game 75-62. Union has reached the conference final 14 of the last 15 years when you include their play prior to the TranSouth conference with the Tennessee Collegiate Athletic Conference. This is the 11th TranSouth Women’s Basketball Championship game and only four schools have ever been represented in the game. This will be the 10th appearance for Union and Trevecca’s fourth. Freed-Hardeman has been to the title game seven times and Lipscomb University played in the game once. Only Union (7) and Freed-Hardeman (3) have ever won the game. Trevecca and Union split on the season, both winning on their home floors. Trevecca defeated Union 69-63 at Trevecca's Moore Gym on January 6 and Union answered with a win at Delay Gym 97-70. Trevecca holds a 3-2 advantage in the series over the last two seasons and the teams are even at 4-4 over the last three seasons. Union holds a 20-6 advantage over the Trojans in the history of the series between the two schools in women’s basketball. Trevecca reached the 25 win mark in a season for the second time in school history with their victory over Martin Methodist in the semifinals. Trevecca won 31 games last season. The win gives Trevecca its first perfect season at home with a 14-0 record and they have now won 29 of their last 30 homes games over the last two seasons. Trevecca is assured of its eighth consecutive trip to the NAIA Women's Basketball National Tournament. Trevecca gets the bid because they reached the tournament championship versus the regular season champ. The TranSouth gets two automatic bids, one for the regular season champ and the other for the tournament champion. If the regular season champ reaches or wins the tournament final, the other team reaching the title game gets the second bid. The 27th Annual NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Tournament will be at the Oman Arena in Jackson, Tenn. March 14-20, 2007. This is the seventh time Coach Gary Van Atta has led a team to the NAIA National Tournament. He led Montevallo to five consecutive tournaments and a Final Four appearance. He led Trevecca to the Elite Eight in his first season last year. Van Atta has a 9-6 record all-time at the NAIA National Tournament.
