WOMEN'S GOLF: DCA's Birdwell Signs
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Trevecca Nazarene University women's golf coach Michael Johnson announces the signing of Ashley Birdwell of Donelson Christian Academy (DCA) in Donelson, Tenn. The rising senior at DCA will join the Trevecca program for the 2008-2009 school year.
Birdwell qualified and played in the Tennessee Women's Open last year and has qualified again for the 2007 Women's State Open. She finished third in this year's district tournament, second in the region and seventh in the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association (TSSAA) A-AA State Championship. The five-year letter winner has served as the Wildcats captain since her eighth grade year.
Trevecca coach Michael Johnson sees Birdwell fitting in immediately with the program, "I'm pleased to have Ashley commit to our program. She is exactly the kind of person any coach would be happy to have in their program."
"Not only is she a talented golfer, she exemplifies the ideal Christian young lady that will make our campus a better place to be. Ashley is another big-time recruit that continues our efforts to add similarly gifted student-athletes will carry on the tradition we are building with our program."
Trevecca has won the TranSouth Athletic Conference Championship for three consecutive years and returns a solid team for next season including defending conference champion in rising sophomore Betsy Beaver. The team has made it into the NAIA Top 25 in each of the last two seasons.
In 2005 Birdwell won the 13-15 year old division of the Tennessean "School Days" tournament and was a semi-finalist in this year's event. Also in 2005, she was the 1st Flight winner and 3rd overall at the Nashville Women's Golf Association City Championship. For the Class of 2008, she is ranked 9th in Tennessee and 258th nationally on the National Junior Golf Scoreboard.
Birdwell's high school coach Pressley Ramsey is glad to have her for one more year, "We are glad to have Ashley for another year, but know she'll be a great college golfer when that time comes. This is something she's worked for and wanted since the first time I met her."

As a student Birdwell has been equally as impressive. She is ranked 4th in the Junior Class at DCA and is a member of and Treasurer of the National Honor Society and is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars, Who's Who Among American High School Students, Bi-Sci Club, FCA, DCA Student Ambassador, Excel Club, and is a Delegate to the 2007 Volunteer Girl's State.
Her parents are Barry and Stephanie Birdwell of Hermitage.
