October 27-January 3, 2010
Nashville Children's Theatre (NCT) will present Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, beginning October 27 and running through January 3, 2010. Alexander knows it is going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day when he wakes up with gum in his hair, and he is right! Things only get worse as the day goes on: his best friend bails on him, there's no dessert in his lunch bag, there's lima beans for dinner and kissing on TV! The only reasonable response is to move to Australia. Judith Viorst adapted her own award-winning children's book into a marvelous musical that is wacky, wild, and wonderfully wise! With music by Shelly Markham, this show is sure to please kids of all ages. Sponsored by Publix Super Markets Charities, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day opens Tuesday, October 27 at 6:30 PM and weekend performances are scheduled throughout the production. A full schedule for Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is available online. All performances are open to the public, and reservations are recommended. Individual ticket prices are $12 per child (ages 2 to 17), and $17 per adult. Season subscriptions and group discounts are also available. For more information, please visit www.nashvillechildrenstheatre.org or call (615) 254-9103. November 13-22
Steeple Players presents The Homecoming a play based on the book by Earl Hamner, Jr. (and the inspiration for the 1970s TV series, "The Waltons"). The time is the great depression and the large Spencer family, living at the foot of a Virginia mountain, is struggling just to survive. With his father having to take the only available job a long way from home, Clay-Boy is stuck with unusual responsibility for his brothers and sisters. Just reaching manhood, Clay-Boy has a secret yearning that's quite extraordinary for the practical, earth-bound community in which he lives. He wants to write! His father comes home and brings a special gift for his son, a gift that reveals unexpected understanding and the strength of a loving family. Steeple Players’ production runs November 13 through November 22, with shows at 7:30 PM on Friday and Saturday nights, and 2:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The Treatre Department at Trevecca Nazarene University will present The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams on January 28, 29, 30 and February 4, 5, 6. One of Tennessee Williams’s most famous and most powerful plays (and his most patently autobiographical), The Glass Menagerie unfolds in the 1930s from the memory and voice of Tom Wingfield, who lives in poverty in a dingy St. Louis apartment with his mother, Amanda, and his crippled sister, Laura. Although Amanda Wingfield strives to give meaning and direction to her life and to the lives of her children, her own anxieties and illusions, over time, only aggravate her tender, but deteriorating relationships with Tom and Laura. Williams’s poignant masterpiece, centering on an isolated family navigating the murky terrain between reality and illusion in order to cope and endure, throws into sharp relief some of life’s most challenging questions about self-preservation, sacrificial love, and finding hope for a meaningful future. The Treatre Department at Trevecca Nazarene University will present On the Verge, a "modern" comedy by Eric Overmyer, March 18, 19, 20 and 25, 26, 27. From the heart of Africa to the highest Himalayas to Terra Incognita itself, Overmyer’s outrageous, “modern” comedy, On the Verge, plunges his audience into the chimerical adventure of three intrepid Victorian lady explorers who have embarked upon a most unusual journey. Equipped with dialogue as pithy as their helmets, these “sister sojourners” discover more than just the secrets of the rainforest or the dangers of the craggy heights. Their mirthful safari unexpectedly spins them into a kaleidoscopic, mind-bending jaunt from the 19th century into the 20th, encountering along the way hundreds of artifacts from the not-so-distant future. Overmyers’ hilarious multi-media continuum of space, time, history, geography, feminism, fashion, and pop-culture rounds off TNU’s theatre season with a roar. As Puck plays tricks on the ill-fated lovers, you will laugh as the antics of the night become resolved by the light of the day.
